Growing Tomatoes: A Quick Guide For Beginners

Updated: Jul 22

Tomatoes are a favorite among home gardeners due to their versatility and the joy of harvesting fresh, flavorful fruits. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, here’s a concise guide to help you grow delicious tomatoes in just a few simple steps.

Choosing the Right Variety

First, select the right tomato variety for your needs and climate. Determinate varieties grow to a certain height and produce fruit all at once, making them ideal for container gardening. Indeterminate varieties keep growing and producing fruit throughout the season, perfect for larger gardens.

In Florida we recommend the Washington Cherry Tomatoes, and the Indigo Cherry Tomatoes which can be found on our seeds page.

Planting

Start with quality seeds or seedlings. If planting seeds in a colder climate, start them indoors and after 6-8 weeks transfer outdoors, once the seedlings have grown a few inches tall, and the danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil, and space the plants about 18-24 inches apart to ensure good air circulation.

If Growing in warmer climate and in a EGS system, plant your tomatoes as you normally would any plant.

Watering and Feeding

Tomatoes need frequent watering. Aim to water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry, which helps prevent diseases. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and reduce weeds. Feed your tomato plants with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and fruit production.

The Easy Grow systems handle watering and fertilizing, moisture retention, and weed prevention. Plants will receive three feedings daily, and the use of vermiculite as a growing medium aids in moisture retention.

Pruning and Staking

Pruning is essential for healthy tomato plants. Remove the lower leaves and suckers to improve air circulation and direct energy towards fruit production. Use stakes, cages, or trellises to support the plants, keeping them upright and preventing the fruits from touching the ground.

Pest Control

Keep an eye out for common tomato pests like aphids, hornworms, and whiteflies. Use organic pest control methods such as introducing beneficial insects (like ladybugs), using insecticidal soaps, or applying neem oil. Regularly inspect your plants and take action at the first sign of trouble.

Harvesting

Harvest your tomatoes when they are fully colored and slightly soft to the touch. For the best flavor, pick them in the morning when they’re cool. Regularly harvesting ripe tomatoes encourages the plant to produce more fruit throughout the season.

Enjoying Your Harvest

There’s nothing quite like the taste of homegrown tomatoes. Enjoy them fresh in salads, sandwiches, sauces, or simply on their own. Growing your own tomatoes can be a rewarding and delicious experience.
